Shaping Ourselves
The sonnet I wrote that inspired the piece... Pictures for trips across the globe. Facetime calls. Video messages. Love notes and Hallmark cards. You felt closer than the hotel sheets. Wedding ring tattooed on my finger, No metal. No gold. No silver. Flesh stained eternally, dissolved miles. You were etched upon my body. My heart. My very soul. But now, as we retreat to separate parts of the house, Hallways stand like highways, These floorboards stretch like oceans, Mere feet stand like meridians stretched across the globe. This wedding ring tattoo feels as cold and hollow As the ink it's made from.
