Artist Statement:
My anatomical heart paintings are a series of wildly colorful works on square-shaped canvas. Using a combination of oil, acrylic, paint markers, and spray paint, I start each painting by filling the canvas with abstract forms and/or with layers of graffiti-like text. The text may reveal fragments of a conversation, my own poetry, song lyrics that resonate, and even my darkest secrets. I would often layer the text until it is overlapping and no longer legible. I also hand cut my own stencils, and carve and print linocut hearts to collage in as well. I have also incorporated other elements such as glass, string, pages from books, printouts from EKGs, and other found objects. Over time, the paintings naturally took on more of a personal narrative. Each came to reflect a fragment of my own life and what I was experiencing at the time. I explored my own queer identity as well as my connections with others. My love for color and abstract painting has also influenced and informed this work, as well as the American folk art of quilting…as I view each series of mine as a pieced together quilt, a mosaic of a life.
