Part of my longstanding chicken-painting habit, Nostalgia Hen was aesthetically inspired by Lisa Frank branded items from my early 2000’s childhood, and the message by the 2023 Barbie movie and the emotional impact it left on me. I considered it an act of feminism while painting to reclaim my childlike love for vibrant colors, sparkle, and pink. The expression on the the chicken’s face is one of awe at the fantastical scene. Is it funny, kitsch, immature or just too much? Yes. Do I love it anyway? Absolutely.
Artist Statement:
I am a realism painter exploring themes of nature in a variety of media. These works, while pleasant to the eye, explore the tangled relationship between humans and nature. This relationship is both one of forces opposed to each other and inexplicably tied together. Humans can have a devastating impact on our environment, but in many everyday cases, you can observe the Earth reclaiming where humans have moved on. Meanwhile, the human race is beholden to time and ultimately to our planet as well. My paintings explore the beauty of the balance between human activity and the Earth’s reciprocity, and the sublime power nature holds.
