Description:
Composed over the span of 4 years (01/20-01/24), this piece represents how I feel about love. It is unfinished and complete all at once. I display that with the use of negative space, as well as eraser marks, areas that are filled in more than others, and even a section where there’s noticeable dust stuck in the ink.
My artwork is very personal to me, and I’m coming to terms with being more selfless about it. Whilst maintaining some integrity and a good sense optimism. I think there can still be room for bold, brash expressions in the form of linework that is bombastic and striking. In this piece, and in other works- I create from a sense of urgency, and I am (almost) always hoping that the viewer notices.
The artwork is an extension of who I am, and I consider my sense of visual language to be compelling enough to want to share it with the world. I’m beginning to feel that way now, at least. I felt this type of energy from the moment my work became more successful, but it’s always two sides. Internal and External.
The internal battle is everything in color. It’s the way two colors mix together and get muddier. My quick, scratch like marks. I always feel like I have something to say. The external is the white space. It’s the bright yellow moments. It’s everything that feels, too good. It’s the explosive composition. It feels as if it’s calling for a confrontation.
However, I ultimately feel this piece is a fair view of where I thought I was going to go as an artist, and how it’s ended up. It’s more like the bottom half, where it started off more like the top. More uniform, more ‘effort’ to be visually appealing. The bottom remarks, the hearts that are laid underneath the flowers are both broken and healed. They are amidst the chaos of this piece though.
Finally, it’s with my attention to surface history that I feel this piece really showcases a great display of growth and self recognition. In the form of time, I found love for myself. You can invest in art supplies, school, your love interests, your family and friends, your own needs- but there’s nothing like just investing time and love into yourself.
Artist Statement:
Jonathan Drew That! (Jonathan Pereira, b. 2001, Manchester, NH) is an artist who is always eager to think outside of the box. Exploring the possibilities of mixed media through techniques involving mostly oil paints, Pereira is endlessly fixated on expanding his skillset and creating new, exciting; thought provoking work. When he is not focused on finding connections within his work to his own real life (and that around him) he searches for inspiration through music, visual arts and various other forms of pop culture. Growing up in the city of Manchester, he often found himself motivated to make work by his classmates, and local passerbys. Since he was a teenager, he’s been exploring the world of public art, sharing and spreading different items around with a recognizable motif that he often recycles. Since his time at New England College, Jonathan has been taking the time to better himself as a student, artist; and young man. He believes that focusing on these areas within his own life, will help him blossom right into whatever he is supposed to be. For now, he continues to find ways to grab attention from the viewer, and create conversations out of creative compositions.
