Artist Name: Lisa Tsiopras
Medium: Smalti Mosaic
Dimensions: 15x11x2″
Description:
I created this piece using smalti glass, gold smalti, glass beads, Sculpey clay, and tinted thinset mortar on ¼” MDF, then mounted it on ½” MDF.
This work represents the way I feel about the heartbreak of family estrangement. It illustrates my trying or wishing to reach out to family members who are beyond reach, trying to hold close and stay connected to those family members I still maintain connection with, mourning the ones who I will never be connected to as flown birds, and acknowledging those who have provided me with light, love, and support through all of it.
There is reason to believe that family estrangement is becoming more common. According to an article in Psychology Today, one in four Americans reported being estranged from a relative in a 2019 nationwide survey of 1,340 Americans aged 18 and older. Another study in 2015 also showed that at least 27 percent of Americans are estranged from a member of their own family, and research suggests about 40 percent of Americans have experienced estrangement at some point. This is occurring at a time when I believe we need the love of our families more than ever.
Artist Statement:
My name is Lisa Tsiopras. I live in Bow, New Hampshire, and I make mosaics. I’ve been creating art since I was old enough to hold a crayon – it’s not optional for me. I’m most interested in portraiture and realism, but I also dive into the abstract. My favorite material to create with is glass. Glass is light made solid, and it is magic for me.
