Description

I created this piece while I was isolated from my family during the pandemic. I painted passionflowers for my mother (she used to pot them and bring them to me), blueberries for my daughter and hid symbols that were meaningful to us like a Great Blue Heron (our symbol for luck). I used a maximalist style deliberately to represent how overwhelmed I was feeling at the time.

Artist Name: Sarah Alexander

Medium: Watercolor with Pen and Ink

Dimensions: 34.5x27x1.5″

Artist Statement:

Alexander works in intricate layered detailed drawings and sculptures inspired by the artist’s garden. There is covert symbolic meaning behind each plant and seed she collects and depicts. Working in a Maximalist style, Alexander creates towers of botanical timelines as they transition from one season to another, exploring the natural order of one’s life cycle, and the dynamics of power, ritual, and succession. “

I am drawn to the symbolism of hidden botanical meanings and am intrigued by the life cycle of plants as they grow, go to seed, and emerge again. It helps me process challenges in understanding life and its mysteries.”
